Today:
- Ed finished off the battery hold downs and installed all the cells.
- I put the gearbox together, complete with 5 handed simultaneous installation of three shafts and 3 selector rods. The detents in the syncromesh turn out to provide no restraint to unmeshing, so I had to install the selector rods and the detents there. This does mean I easily try out each gear before deciding which one to keep (I'm going to strip out as much as I can to save weight and reduce drag).
The low range gear on the input shaft has a strange toothed ring immediately above it which meshes with the gear on the second motion shaft. The strange part is this ring is almost part of the gear but has fewer teeth, so turns faster than the gear right next to it. The other gearset I have doesn't have this separate ring, the gear is just thicker.
- Super dark chocolate is very good.
- We re-installed the rear subframe, now I have somewhere to put the rear wheels! The car is starting to look like a car again.
- Ed installed the height adjustable suspension in the front subframe, including burning out the old nylon knuckle cups (think cartilage in your joints).
- I bought lots of stuff which cost lots of money.
- I made friends with the manager of a local J A Russell who lives at the other end of my street.
- The driveshafts will be ready tomorrow lunchtime, but might be too short due to a cock up.
It would seem that when you have an adapter plate made you must send along the driveshaft, otherwise the adapter plate will interfere with some part of it and you'll have to do some grinding. This happened to Steve, and I'm told also to Gav.
- I probably won't make it to the nationals on Saturday for the motorkahna, I have too much to do. I will very likely be there on Sunday for the show and shine.
