Have you considered a pull-up on the non-inverting line and a pull-down on the inverting line? Such as in the second page of this .pdf:
http://www.embeddedsys.com/subpages/resources/images/documents/microsys_art_RS485.pdf

I've always done this with my RS-485 networks and have not had any problems...

Please let us know how it turns out!

Thanks,
- Steve

    It's actually Tom here,.

Ideally, the cells in the table would be combo boxes and you'd edit the table directly, rather than selecting a row and then editing each column in a separate control on the left hand side.

I'll send you a mock up.

    Hi Phil,

Just read your installation comments for EVision and wanted to ask - you mentioned that configuration software is painful to use. I'm not going to debate if setting up all combos in one screen is painful, but do you have any suggestions then how to improve this GUI? Thanks, your installation looks terrific! Victor

I haven't done anything yet. I had thought of a freewheel diode. I was planning to put resistor between the EVision output and the transistor's base, and a capacitor between the base and ground. That ought to soften up the switching, but it also might not work at all.

I'll report when I try it out, but it's likely to be several months down the track (or if I'm bored some time) as it's quite a minor problem.

Have you added a freewheeling diode across the coil? Directly adding a capacitor directly over the switch output could cause fairly large currents within the transistor. Perhaps a RC or LC filter would be better?
